Youtube is the most popular way of advertising most products now as high amounts of people use it to listen to music, watch trailers for movies and to watch user submitted content. Most major film labels have their own channel on Youtube and post their trailers online but now Youtbue also has advertisments on most videos for products and maybe in the future we could see film trailers in these advertisment slots.
Apple introduced the 'app' which can be used to advertise and promote movies as there are several around which are specifically for watching trailers and reviewing or reading reviews. Many users will read a online review on an online website or in a magazine to decide whether to go and see a movie based on a star rating from a website or magazine which caters to their interests.
Sites such as Twitter and Facebook often advertise films that would interest you based on your common interests. ( Selective Advertising). This will automatically seek out your interests and reccomend films based on them, this is the same strategy used in the past. However, this type of marketing was often seen at the actuall cinemas it used the film genre you went to see as a base for what trialers to show. Also many cinemas had 'B Side' movies which would be lower budget films based around the same genre as the main feature.
The introduction of the TV between 1928 to 1939 saw a huge drop in cinema goers as TV was free and had many different programs on for everyone to enjoy at home. Now however we see many advertisments and trailers for films on the TV which often depend on what channel and time we are watching. Also now on DVD's and videos there will be film trailers for similar genre films and also if the film is part of a series they often advertise the previous or future instalments. This saves them money on distributing their trailers as they dont have to pay to advertise on their own DVD.
